Crowns Q & A

When might I need a dental crown?

Dental crowns restore your teeth by covering them with a porcelain or zirconia cap. These crowns are strong enough to restore full function to the tooth and beautiful enough to be used for aesthetic purposes.

You may use a dental crown to:

  • Restore a significantly decayed tooth
  • Strengthen and preserve cracked or broken teeth
  • Protect a tooth after a root canal
  • Restore a tooth’s natural shape
  • Cover a stained tooth
  • Fill in a gap between teeth
  • Improve the appearance of slightly crooked teeth

Dr. Qing can also replace a missing tooth with a crown that’s attached to a dental implant.

Will my crown match my existing teeth?

Your new crown will match the color, size, and shape of your existing teeth. Crowns made for front teeth consist of porcelain or zirconia. Both materials have a translucent quality that makes them look just like natural teeth, and they’re tinted to be the same color as your other teeth.

Crowns made for molars consist of porcelain lined with metal or zirconia alone. Porcelain needs the extra support of metal to stand up to the pressure of chewing, while zirconia is strong enough on its own.

What is the process of getting a crown?

Dr. Qing uses a conservative, minimally invasive technique for crowns. However, the basic procedure typically requires two office visits.

At your first visit, Dr. Qing prepares the tooth by removing decay if necessary and slightly reshaping the tooth to make room for the crown. If you’re getting a dental implant to replace a missing tooth, the implant is inserted during your first visit.

Dr. Qing then takes an impression of your mouth and sends it to the lab that’s making your crown. You wear a temporary crown until your permanent crown is ready. During your second visit, Dr. Qing removes the temporary crown and replaces it with your new permanent one.

If you get an implant, Dr. Qing may recommend giving the bone time to heal and fuse with the implant before attaching your permanent crown. However, he fully explains the procedure to you during your initial visit.
